With the trend in business towards globalization, we are seeing increased opportunities for expats to move overseas. Whether it is a short-term, long-term or permanent relocation, such move is often mixed with excitement and anxiety for expats and their families. While there is an excitement about the new life abroad, it can also create anxiety about leaving an established life and loved ones behind. Adjustments are needed in both work and life, with challenges of emerging yourself in a different culture, language, climate, business practices, interacting with host nationals, making new friends, etc.
It is said that there are different stages one goes through in the adjustment cycle before you settle and learn to appreciate the new environment and the expatriate lifestyle; preparation, honeymoon, culture shock, and adaptation (Oberg, 1960). You may not experience all of these stages in the same order or in the same way as people are different. But, even the most prepared individuals could experience a culture shock, where they endure a period of stress, homesickness, depression or frustration. It is important that you allow yourself to adapt at your own pace with an open mind - an openness to enjoy a new experience with a beginner’s mind. Communication with people from your own culture who are in the host location can be helpful as they serve as a bridge.
Having experienced several ‘culture shocks’ myself, I know too well the difficulties and challenges in living overseas before being able to fully adapt. However, the benefits far surpass the negatives. You get the opportunity to learn and appreciate different cultures, people, languages and values that will broaden your perspective. For me, the experience has also let me to have a new-found appreciation for my home country.
Many expats have claimed that their family life improved with stronger connection between family members. For children, the experience will increase their communication skills, knowledge, adaptability and self-confidence. By learning how to adapt to new environments and accept new cultures, they develop positive approaches to changes and will learn to overcome obstacles. Such experiences are priceless and go a long way in the future.
